Get moody (in a good way)

Designing a romantic bedroom will require some colour, some sparkle and some softness. One of the easiest ways to create an enticing atmosphere is to add a deep moody paint colour.

A bedroom is the perfect place to test the waters if you’ve been toying with darker shades but haven’t yet taken the leap. Paint is a low cost, minimal time investment that can quickly transform a space from bland to beautiful.

Q: What colours are best to achieve a moody romantic look?

There are so many gorgeous colours that will add drama to a bedroom. Begin by gathering images on Pinterest to help narrow down which colour scheme inspires you the most. Moreover, take a cue from bedding, art or even a deeper shade of your favourite colour.

Midnight blue, dark earthy green and even soft black, for instance, are very popular choices these days. Here are some stylish moody paint colours for 2024.

Because I love purple; deep plum to be exact, I considered several colours until I landed on the right one. Ever since my first apartment, I’ve had some kind of purple in my bedroom. (My husband knew what he signed up for LOL)

In the end, I chose Benjamin Moore’s Amazon Soil. It’s a deep earthy eggplant that pairs perfectly with creams, taupes, greys and white.

Pro Tip:

In order to ensure you have the right shade, it’s always best to sample the paint colour first and observe it over a few days in the changing light. You can buy small testers and paint them on or use a convenient peel and stick sample tile that is large sized and reusable.

Paint Options

When it comes to painting a cozy romantic bedroom, you have choices…

First, you can immerse the whole room in colour.  This is called colour drenching and is done by painting out everything the same colour. That includes the walls, the trim and even the ceiling.  And while that look is dramatic, it may not be for everyone.

Alternatively, create a focal wall with the moody paint, followed by a complementary shade on the other walls. Then, for even more depth and dimension, add wall moulding painted in the same colour.

Add a statement headboard

Another option would be to consider adding an eye-catching headboard, like this king size French tufted one. This was my biggest upholstery project to date. (My teacher had to help me carry it into class each week). Worth it!!

Q: How do I keep the whole room from looking too dark?

Create contrast: The first step is to apply the principle of Contrast to balance the dark paint.  By adding lighter accents with furniture and textiles, it will help keep things looking inviting and cozy.

Bedding: Next, look for bedding in complementary shades (white, cream and grey for example)to keep everything looking light and airy. For instance, with my upholstered headboard, I chose a soft champagne fabric with a subtle crocodile texture to pop against the plum wall. (Duvet cover-HomeSense)

Light and lovely tables: Following that, consider the furniture choices. For this moody romantic bedroom, the once dark brown thrifted bedside tables were given a fresh new look with a coat of white paint and some clear lucite handles. Then I added Marble Peel and Stick film to the top to elevate the look and make it scratch resistant. Details on the simple installation are in my DIY Bedside table makeover post.

Amp up the romance factor with luxe touches:

Bedroom Decor: Equally important are the final finishes. Make sure to add some luxe details like a chandelier or unique light fixture. In addition, LED bulbs that change colour are a playful way to create a seductive atmosphere.

Mirrors and lamps in a metallic finish help add a touch of elegance. Velvety soft pillows, throw blankets and scented candles are certain to evoke a romantic mood. (all HomeSense finds). A stylish velvet upholstered bench adds a touch of glam at the foot of the bed.

Bring the heat

One of my favourite ways to turn up the heat (both literally and figuratively) is with a fireplace. I mean is there anything more relaxing that staring at a fire? The stress of the day simply melts away.

You can find wall mounted fireplaces at many home improvement stores. Ours was an end of season Costco score. (Spring is a great time of year to find them on clearance!).

Everyone deserves a calm relaxing space away from the busy day. A moody romantic bedroom where you can close the door, light some candles and get reconnected to your special someone.

Bonne nuit!
