My most often asked “thrift” question…

“Is thrifting worth it?” The answer for me is always a resounding “YES!!” There are countless benefits to thrifting so today I’m sharing the “why and how” of incorporating thrifted decor into your home.

The thrill of the thrift!

When you start browsing thrift shops, you’ll uncover many hidden gems. From furniture to decor (and everything in between), it’s a treasure hunt for quality pieces. Yes, it can be a hit and a miss, but when it’s a hit, you can find vintage or designer items for a fraction of what you’d pay at an antique store.

Around here, checking out thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales, is a family affair. My boys are on the hunt for books and albums, while I’m scouring the furniture and decor departments.

Thrift store decor: Why you should give it a try.

It is, hands down, one of my favourite ways to uncover unique home decor finds for a personalized, “collected over time” look. Sometimes these treasures need to be transformed and sometimes they simply need to be polished up.  But each piece has a story and a history and can be repurposed for today.

Thrifting is a fun and exciting way to find décor that is: 1) Unique 2) Affordable 3) Easily transformed 4) Ready for your creative touch.

Bonus tip: How to clean tarnished brass

Found some vintage brass? Keep the patina or shine it up. Your home, your choice.

If you want to make it gleam: try a little Bar Keeper’s friend (or if you prefer a Homemade brass polish,). All it takes is a little elbow grease, some paper towel and a lint free cloth (and a nail brush for the detailed areas) to banish tarnish and bring back that beautiful shine.

Styling thrift store decor: Brass plate repurposed

Thrifted Brass, for example, is an affordable way to incorporate gold accents into your decor. It’s also fun to find ways to repurpose these treasures for modern living.

Because my son needed something to hold his favourite coins (or guitar picks :), I snapped up this $5 vintage plate as soon as I saw it. It added a unique touch in his recent Teen bedroom makeover.

Since it also reminded me of my grandpa’s coin dish, it means that every time I look at it, I have fond memories of his ever jingling pocket full of coins.

My most watched reel! (97 k and counting!)

When I first shared an Instagram tutorial on this thrifted brass plate, I had so many people reach out to say that they remembered their Grandpa or Father having the exact same dish.

They also mentioned that they would now be adding it to their thrift “shopping” list. Some who still had one were inspired to dig it out, shine it up and display it as a functional piece of decor on the front entry table.

I love hearing that others were inspired to give old treasures new purpose in their homes too.  What a special way to remember and honour those we have loved or create new memories today.
