Bamboo Cookie Tray DIY decor idea: a pretty kitchen accent
Looking for affordable ways to elevate decor? Check out this easy Bamboo Cookie Tray DIY Decor idea to level up the cutest dollar store find.

Summer snacking dilemma
With summer vacation approaching, snack options become a priority for our ever growing boys. Because I love baking, I’m always on the hunt for cute covered trays to keep goodies fresh but also visibly accessible.
Having had a glass tray+lid in the past, I quickly learned that teen boys and delicate decor are not best buddies. Choosing a wood tray with a plastic lid meant I didn’t have to listen to the loud clink of glass every they dropped it down, always wondering if today is the day it breaks!
DIY Decor solution
When I found this bamboo cheese platter at the dollar store, I knew it was the perfect size for a covered cookie tray. One problem….the lid had no proper handle, just an indentation to pinch. That made it tricky to access those sweet treats. Time to get creative!

Q: What else can I use to create a covered cookie tray?
Look for any round plate or tray (that works with your kitchen aesthetic) and pair it with a slightly smaller clear plastic bowl flipped upside down. The new handle will be glued on top of the flat bowl base.
Cookie tray DIY supplies:
- Dollar store covered Bamboo platter (or plate + clear plastic bowl)
- a selection of cabinet knobs or pretty bottle toppers (wine/spirits)
- a small artist brush (dollar store)
- Gorilla glue (minis)
- Rub n Buff metallic finish (I used Antique Gold)
- sandpaper 150grit (optional)
How to keep it budget friendly
In order to keep this DIY simple and affordable, I turned to supplies I already had on hand. I started by gathering pretty wood and rose gold cork toppers (thank you purple gin!). Next I chose a cabinet knob leftover out from a recent project.

Affordable upcycling! An easy project like this is a great way to repurpose old hardware. In addition, it’s an opportunity to level up a simple dollar store find and create a pretty kitchen accent.
DIY covered cookie tray: 3 Simple Steps
Before you begin, decide which “new” handle you want to use. Because of it’s size and shape, I chose a knob from our old vanity, but it wasn’t the right colour.

First, clean your handle with a little dish soap to remove any residue. My knob was textured so I didn’t scuff it up first. However, you could always take a little 150 grit sandpaper to remove a bit of the sheen if yours has a shiny metal finish.

Second, use your small brush to add Rub n Buff in whichever metal finish coordinates best for your kitchen. I matched mine to my antique brass kitchen hardware . This product dries within a few hours, but I let it dry overnight before attaching it.

Third, attach the painted handle to the lid with a tiny bit of glue. I really like these Mini tubes of Gorilla glue because then I don’t worry about a big tube of glue drying out between projects.

In the end, not counting wait time for things to dry, this was a fun little 5 minute project! Such a simple way to add some elegance and function to this inexpensive dollar store find.

Now that I’ve made it easier to access the treats, I am going to need to make a double batch. These hungry teens are eating machines!
Summer vacation…here we come!!
